How Moment locations work

The traveller picks the place. Nothing is auto-detected and nothing is verified.

Updated 24 August 2026

Whoever posts a Moment chooses the place it is attached to. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth being precise about what follows from it.

What we do not do

  • We do not GPS-lock a Moment to where the device was.
  • We do not auto-detect the location from the photo.
  • We do not verify that the person was physically there.

So treat a Moment as a traveller telling you about a place — which is genuinely useful — rather than as evidence of a visit. We would rather you knew exactly how much that pin is worth than imply a verification we do not perform.

If a Moment is attached to the wrong place, or is not what it claims to be, report it.
